Dr. Lawrence's Story

Life I actually attended Fountain High School (yes...this was before it became Fountain-Ft. Carson High School) for my Senior year, 1951-52. The school was located on Main Street just about 2 blocks south of Martin's Drug Store (which may no longer exist). There were still wooden sidewalks and horse rails. The street was dirt that provided many excellent mud puddles for splashing those on the sidewalks. I got my first traffic ticket for driving on the wrong side of the street (in Fountain??) and hitting a mud puddle to splash a couple of my friends..... When I left Fountain to join the Marines, I never moved back. We had a farm c. 3.5 miles north of Fountain off old 85-87 highway...just past the railroad embankment. There was no Security or Widefield at that time. I came home on leave in 1955 and discovered a huge red arrow buried in the dirt which is now the main entrance to Security. The town of Security was underway. After the Marines, I spent more time with Olson Plumbing Co in Colo Sprgs as an apprentice plumber...a job I had before joining the Corps. I moved to CA in August, 1958, and started undergraduate school at California Baptist College in Riverside, CA. (Which is now a University). From there on to Golden Gate Seminary for 1.5 years...finished my tour as a Pastor in 1965 serving as an interim pastor for the Lemon Heights Baptist Church. I decided to leave the ministry after I threatened to kick ass and take names of a couple of deacons who were causing trouble. After I left seminary, I got a job teaching in the Ocean View School District, Huntington Beach, CA...where I stayed for several years until I left teaching and went into private practice as a shrink. I shrunk (or expanded) heads until 1987 when I retired from that venture and moved to Albuquerque, NM., where I now reside. In the Albuquerque area (Rio Rancho), I ran a Marine JROTC program for 9 years, retired from th...Expand for more
at in 1997 and finished my tour in education as a high school Counselor. I retired from that in May, 2006. I have many good memories of my years in the Fountain area. Our Senior class of 1952 took a week off of school, rented a Continental Trailways bus (with driver) and went to Salt Lake City for our Senior class trip. Has anyone done anything like that since then? I think we had as much fun on the bus as we did in Salt Lake. I think we had 22 kids in the class of '52. Our last reunion was 5 years ago...I am ready for another one if I can find any survivors...??? One of my main interests is the military. My Dad was a Marine in WWI, I spent 8 years during the Korean War and I have a younger brother who served with the 3dMarineDivision during Viet Nam. In 1989, I joined the New Mexico State Guard as a Captain. I received my professional commission as Captain due to my Ph.D. and years as a Psychologist. Today, I hold the rank of Brigadier General and am still active in the State Guard...which is the National Guard Reserve. I married in 1957 and reared 3 kids. I went through a divorce in 1979 and remarried in 1980 to my present wife, Deborah. I have 6 grandchildren and I don't know how many nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews and maybe even grand-grand nieces & nephews. Coming from a family of 12 kids, I have quite a reservoir of relatives. I am always interested in exchanging conversation, ideas, etc., with anyone who has the same inclination. I posted two pics of myself...one when I was a Marine in 1955...after just being promoted to Sergeant and the other is a recent shot of me in my Brigadier General garb. I can't figure out what happened to me...the pics sure look different!! High School memory.... Putting a dead rattler on the steering wheel of a drunk friend whose car was parked in front of the Round Up Tavern in Fountain...just across from Boddy's Chevron station. 1952.
